The inserts are specifically designed components used in a given block in order to align as close as possible the fastener’s shank and head to the center of the set block. They ensure that a certain clearance (.0005 to .0015 inch) exists between the fastener shank diameter and the insert inside diameter. The use of the insert with the set block ensures a better centering and normality of the fastener’s head in the set block at the time of the measurement.

The inserts outer dimensions are different for each block part number in order to avoid accidental usage in other blocks.

The following table (table 1) shows the standard inserts and their dimensions for their respective set blocks. These inserts are used to measure the finished fasteners (including coating). Special insert sizes have been developed for each block in order to measure the head protrusion of the fasteners in different manufacturing stages – see table 2.

The styluses are an important component of the Fastener Measurement System. The stylus comes in direct contact with the top surface of the fastener. This is a critical measurement for determining the fastener’s head protrusion. There are three basic configurations of the stylus:

Annular – contacts the top surface on an outer ring area of the head

Flat – contacts the highest point of the head surface and covers 80% of the head surface

Point – contacts the head of the fastener in the center on a small point (.03″ diameter)

All the styluses are interchangeable with both the base unit and remote unit. They are dimensionally and geometrically controlled in order to ensure minimum reading errors in the measurement. The following tables show the different stylus sizes for both the annular and flat configurations.

BLOCKS

The set blocks represent basic components of the Fastener Head Protrusion Measurement System. They are chamfered edge type blocks that accommodate for a larger range of fastener head gage diameters – in comparison with the sharp edge type, which are specifically built for one gage diameter. The chamfer edge configuration eliminates the extensive edge inspection and the relative short life of its sharpness. These chamfered edge blocks have permanently attached to them an Button (64k memory button) in which current pertinent information and dimensions are stored every time they are calibrated and certified. The following table lists the set blocks sizes that we are currently manufacturing. Other new set blocks can be developed to match specific requirements and sizes of fasteners to be measured.

STANDS

The stand is designed to accommodate all the set blocks listed in the set block page including the zero block. The stands can accommodate a fastener with a total length of 4.0 inches maximum. They have a hole through that allows a chain to connect the set block with the remote unit – the indicator has entered in the calculated preset value of that specific set block. They can be engraved on the side with the included angle of the set block and they can also be color coded as requested.

Special stands that accommodate fasteners with an overall length of maximum 8.0 inches are also available at the customer’s request. These stands have an 8.0 x 8.0 inch rectangular base that ensures greater stability of the set block and remote unite during the measurements.

PROTECTIVE COVERS & DATA COLLECTION CABLES

We are offering one clear plastic protective cover for increased protection of the digital indicator against oil, solvent, cleaning solution and dust infiltration through its front buttons and display face. This cover is molded around the data port and the central spindle of the indicator and fits tightly to the indicator’s face. In normal shop environment it will last a relatively long time until it becomes cloudy and hard to read trough and/or is torn. When damaged it can be replaced with ease. This cover offers an inexpensive way to extend the life of the indicator in the shop environment with multiple contaminants. Special indicator enclosures are available in order to protect the indicator from shock or accidental drops.

Data transfer cables are custom made to connect the indicator with the customer’s data collecting interface at the desired location. Standard cable length is 6 feet (2 meters).

This is a high precision digital gage for quick and accurate measurement of the structure thickness expressed in grip values or linear values (inch/mm). The modular design allows the gage to expand its measuring range in 16 increments from 0 to 96 grip (0.000 to 6.000 inch) or more. Expressing the measurements in grip values eliminates any conversion errors (inch to mm, for example) and gives the operator the ability to select the proper fastener for the given thickness of the structure. This gage was developed to replace the existing scale or mechanical type grip gages in use today. The digital indicator allows the gage to express the readings in grip numbers as expressed in the fastener standards and used by the fastener manufacturing companies. The precision and accuracy of this digital type gage is also much higher than the existing gages in use now.
